Historic site

Sävö has played an important role in Sweden’s defense, and remnants of old fortifications can still be seen on both sides of Sävsundet. However, the island is best known as a pilot station, where pilots lived from the 1600s until 1967.

On the southeastern tip of the island, there is a small museum that showcases the history of piloting. During World War II, seven pilots lived here, and today the old pilot houses have been converted into a cozy hostel for visitors.

Did you know:

Stella Maris stands as a guardian on Sävö, watching over the sea and the archipelago. A Madonna with a protective mantle, imbued with the power of nature, created to ward off forces and strengthen one’s own powers. She stands there to protect the sea we all share and defend.

For a long time, the Baltic Sea was a battleground where various countries fought for dominance over the waters. Today, the struggle has shifted to preserving the sea itself.

Stella Maris means ‘Star of the Sea’ and is a female figure carved from oak, with a mantle made from several hundred-year-old reused boards from a demolished workers’ house at Gärdesta.
